One of the fundamental principles in the Montessori classroom is freedom of choice.

From the thoughtfully curated shelves around the classroom, the children are able to choose which materials to work with, what skill sets to practice, and where to work in the classroom.

Free choice promotes intrinsic motivation, supports each child’s unique needs and interests, and allows each child to take responsibility for their learning.

When the children are able to exercise their freedom of choice, they are actively engaged in the learning process, they take joy and pride in what they are doing, and they stayed focused.
As the children engage with the works, the teachers are carefully observing what each child is interested in, how they are engaging with the materials, and what they are ready to be challenged with next. As a result, the prepared environment will be changed, modified, and extended to meet the ever-changing needs and interests of the children in the classroom.
The final result is a classroom full of happily working children, all engaged with the materials of their own choice.
